YouTube Can Cost You A Lot of Time and Money

A novice coming into the appliance repair business often thinks that,

“All I need to do is take a look at the appliance and then go to Youtube, figure out how to fix it, get the part and replace the part just like that guy said on Youtube and everything will be fine and I’ll make lots of money.”

Unfortunately, it doesn’t take too long to find out that they are sadly mistaken, surely within the first three or four  jobs they are gonna run across a stumbler that Youtube doesn’t fix and be up the creek with no paddle. I remember quite clearly when a prospective student called me all upset and said,

“Harry, I’ve been YouTubed to death! I’ve been chasing my tail for months and I’m ready to buy your course. Youtube doesn’t help me at all; I can’t figure this stuff out! I need your help”

So why is it that all the wonderful fix it videos on Youtube can cause so much trouble and be so little help?

No Filter

There are a number of reasons, first off there is no filter on Youtube and consequently folks innocently post stuff that is just patently wrong and there is nobody there to correct them or take it down. It just stays there even though they are dead wrong. How is a novice supposed to know what is incorrect?

So the novice winds up going down the wrong path, off in the weeds doing the wrong thing, replacing the wrong part, getting frustrated and wasting time and money. But the thing that fries me most is for example, ‘My Dyer Won’t Heat,’ you look it up on Youtube and the guy on Youtube says, “You need to replace the heating element.”   So you buy a heating element, you put it in and that’s not your problem. In total frustration you scream,

“What the  Hell do I do Now? “

No Diagnostic Tests

The guy on Youtube never tells you how to confirm that that’s your problem nor do they ever tell you what the other problems could be or how to test and figure out that that’s really your problem; you never, ever hear any of that on Youtube. No diagnostic logic or tests, just how to replace parts.

It’s up to me to help you avoid falling into the Youtube trap, you need to learn the basics and you need to learn what questions to ask and what diagnostic tests to run before you rush off and order a part. You don’t want to guess, you want to know for sure so that you don’t waste time and money. And when you are stuck you need quick help!

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that Youtube is useless but you have to be pretty smart or an expert in order to filter and sift through all the crap and find the valuable stuff and until you reach a certain level of expertise you can’t separate the good from the bad.  So what are you going to do?

Are you going to fumble around for six months or six  years going through a painful learning curve or are you going to bypass all the mines and the minefields, go right to the target and get this stuff right the first time?

    Uncle Harry, What you state here is absolutely true. All technicians must approach each call with a standard troubleshooting plan to eliminate the obvious. A tech can then correctly get to the root cause of the problem otherwise he is a hypothesizing parts changer often proved wrong. The tech must have a firm understanding of the distribution of power through the appliance at any given moment with the ability to hopscotch thru the electric wiring for correct diagnostic understanding sometime there will be more than 1 problem and to fix the 2nd the 1st must be done.
